The unforgiving nature of Australia’s outback landscape is one of the reasons we prefer an off-road caravan. Are you ready to go over uncharted territory with an off-road caravan built to withstand the harsh Australian environment? If your inner adventurer is yearning to get out and live the life of a nomad, here are some of our tips for great off-the-grid recreational vehicle modifications.
Frame & Chassis
An off-road caravan’s chassis and frame are essentially the vehicle’s bones. You need to ensure that your off-road camper can handle the terrain it will encounter.
Ground Clearance & Suspension
High-quality shock absorbers and springs are essential. An off-road caravan ensures enough space for your vehicle when travelling off-road and shock transfer. This also ensures that you do not damage the caravan’s underbody.
Capacity for Free Camping
If you’re buying an off-road caravan, you’re probably thinking of going off the grid. So, upgrading your water system to a larger water tank and toilets and grey-water tanks is strongly advised. Most free camps cater only to self-sufficient caravans. You’ll also need a big water tank if you go to where the city water isn’t drinkable, or the council taps are closed due to a drought. A grey-water tank is also a must, as it prevents food leftovers and detergent from being dumped on the campsite.
Solar-powered camping
Solar panels are an excellent choice if you are free camping because they keep your battery charged while you relax and enjoy nature. They are silent, odourless, need little maintenance and are environmentally beneficial. You can recharge your batteries when your supply runs out by staying at a vacation park. The amount of storage you have will decide how many nights you can go off the grid.
Free camping etiquette
Camping etiquette is something we cannot stress the importance of enough. There are unspoken rules that are easy to understand. Even the remote areas or free camping locations require etiquette to be followed to make camping a pleasurable experience for all.
For example, many bars set aside clean, flat spaces in the back of their establishments for campers. Although you are free to camp, it is customary to thank the publican by paying for a meal or drink.
In towns with designated free campgrounds, replace your instant coffee with a café latte, or go to the butcher for a couple of dinners. Spend some money in the community, and visit the farmers’ market to stock up on produce. Similarly, if you are using parks with playgrounds, libraries, and free water parks, spend time in the town if you use these services. The council and community will thank you for caring and will be delighted to see you again.
