Used Caravans – Buying From a Private Seller or a Dealer

Should you be buying a new or used Caravan?

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make when buying a caravan is whether you want to buy a new caravan or a used one. At RV Central, we have both used and new caravans in stock, giving you a great range to compare. Whether you decide to buy a new or a pre-loved van, getting on the road in your new home on wheels is always the end goal. If you’re new to caravanning, a used van may be a better way to go as it’s your first caravan, and you want to be sure you’ll love it. It’s also about getting more ‘bang for your buck.’ Although you may be able to afford a new small caravan, you may want to pick a more premium/larger used caravan instead. Purchasing a used caravan is a terrific way to save money whilst getting more features.

Should you Buy from a Dealer or a Private Seller?

Once you’ve decided on your first question and if you’ve decided a used van is the way to go, you need to consider whether to buy from a private seller or a reputable caravan dealer. There are a few things to look at in order to make an informed decision on this one.

What to know about a private sale

Inspecting:

When buying a second-hand caravan privately, you don’t want to be taken advantage of in any way. You must always keep in mind that there is no warranty, and you will have no recall if something goes wrong when buying a caravan from a private seller. If you haven’t purchased a van before, it would be advisable that you engage a licensed caravan mechanic to inspect your purchase before handing over any money.  Do not, under any circumstances, purchase a used caravan or camper sight unseen.

Pricing:

When it comes to the caravan’s pricing, do your research. You may want to save as much money as feasible, but remember if it’s too good to be true, you’re probably right! Saving some hard-earned cash is probably the main reason for buying used, so due diligence is a must to ensure that money is spent wisely.

Financing:

Private sellers frequently base their offers on the caravan’s current market value and consider the vehicle’s condition at the time of sale before fixing a price. Because they will receive cash for the vehicle, they may be willing to haggle and sell at a reduced price. While you may still be able to get a caravan loan and use it to buy from a private seller, this is a laborious process through the banks and with the seller and can take much longer than through a dealer.

History:

When purchasing a used caravan, the condition of the caravan and the history of repairs are frequently a concern. You have to do the due diligence with a private seller to ensure that the vehicle has nothing owing and that it has a clear title. A private seller may not be any more aware of previous owners than you are, or if maintenance is up to date. Once again, research is key. if there is an indication f where it was purchased, or if they tell you where they service, make some calls and check if there were ever any issues.

Why Buy From a Dealer?

Convenience:

A dealer offers a variety of vans all in one location, giving you more choice in your selection. Licensed used caravan dealers will do more than sell you a caravan. Most dealers have professional staff who can help you finance and insure your vehicle, protect your investment (with rust fabric and paint protection) and add the proper accessories to meet your needs. It is a one-stop-shop for all your caravan requirements.

Dealers usually provide repair and servicing services and replacement parts, ensuring that your vehicle continues to run well long after you’ve taken delivery. Many dealers offer better deals when you have bought from them that are unavailable to anyone who walks in the door.

Warranty:

Buying a caravan from a dealership ensures a vehicle with a warranty. This means that if something goes wrong with the caravan within a specific time frame, the dealership will cover the costs of repairs. Make sure you read the warranty’s fine print to understand what is not covered.

Financing:

A dealership like RV Central accepts financing from various sources, but they also frequently have their own finance. This means that you could go to the dealership, select a van, acquire financing, and drive away in your new caravan all within a matter of days.

History:

With a licensed dealer, you are assured that the title to the vehicle is correct. The dealer is responsible for any money owed to a financier on the vehicle by a prior owner. You can get all your doubts clarified from the salespeople who will be professionals and offer expert advice on which vehicle best meets your requirements.

Trade-ins:

Many dealers will pay a reasonable price for your trade vehicle if the model is in demand and in good shape. Dealers can accept trade-ins, allowing you to drive your old van in and your new van out with no ait time. If you owe money on your current vehicle, they make the transition easy without the need for pricey bridging loans.

Buying a preowned caravan from a dealer means that you get spared a lot of trouble associated with a private purchase, as all the up-front work is done by the dealer. They inspect the van and do any maintenance required before it goes up for sale, leaving you nothing to worry about except where to adventure first!
